Before you pay
How is this different from an app that scores a scripted read-along?
You are not reading a script. You say what you would actually say, and the grader reads your words — not a fixed answer key. The controller replies the way a controller would, including when your call was wrong or incomplete, and the situation moves on from there. Every point of feedback names the AIM or Pilot/Controller Glossary paragraph behind it, so you can check it and so can your instructor.
What does it grade against?
The FAA Aeronautical Information Manual, the Pilot/Controller Glossary and FAA Order JO 7110.65 — phraseology, order, completeness, the mandatory readbacks and the right facility. Each exercise lists the paragraphs it is graded on, and every piece of feedback carries its reference.
Does it cover IFR?
Yes, and it is included rather than an upgrade. The VFR set covers initial contact, readbacks, position reports, the traffic pattern, non-towered airports and CTAF, Class B, C and D, flight following and radar services, emergencies, and numbers, altimeter and time. The IFR set covers the clearance and what has to be read back, requesting a full route clearance, climb-via departures, void times, holding instructions and the required reports, approach clearances, the missed approach and canceling IFR in the air. All of it is graded against the AIM, the Pilot/Controller Glossary and the controller's own order, with the paragraph shown.
Does it count for WINGS credit or a certificate?
No. TowerTalk is not an FAA-approved course, it awards no WINGS credit and it issues no certificate. It is practice, plus a graded record you and your instructor can read. Your CFI and your examiner remain the authorities.
What equipment do I need?
A browser and a microphone. A headset is nice but not required, and a phone works — you hold a push-to-talk button, or switch it to hands-free.
Can I practice at my own airport?
Yes. Any public-use airport in the FAA data — 4,715 of them — with its published frequencies, today's METAR and the real traffic nearby, where available.
What happens when the 90 days end?
Final Approach is a single payment and does not renew. When the 90 days are up you drop back to the free tier automatically, and your progress and logbook stay exactly where they are.
Subscriptions and passes cover everything — solo AI practice and live multiplayer rooms alike.
