First time flying into a Class D airport
A Class D airport is a towered airport, and the first time you fly into one you meet the rule that governs every towered field in the country: you may not enter until the tower has answered you using your call sign. Everything else follows from that one sentence in the AIM.
Here is the arrival, from fifteen miles out to the ramp, with the paragraph for each step.
Before you call: the ATIS
Listen to the ATIS first and write down the letter, the runway, the wind and the altimeter. Saying “with Information Charlie” on your first call means the tower need not read you the weather, and the tower’s own procedures let it skip the landing information when you do (JO 7110.65 3-10-1).
When to call: about fifteen miles out
The AIM says to make the initial call-up to the tower about 15 miles from the airport (AIM 4-3-2 a), and to call far enough out that you cannot cross the Class D boundary before two-way communication is established (AIM 3-2-5 b 3). Class D usually extends about four miles from the field, so fifteen miles gives you time for a busy frequency.
What to say
The AIM lists it for an arriving aircraft: position, altitude, destination, and any request (AIM 3-2-5 b 3), inside the standard first-call shape of facility, full identification, then the message (AIM 4-2-3 a 1). Add the ATIS letter. Add “student pilot” if you are one (AIM 4-2-4 c).

The reply that lets you in, and the one that does not
If the tower answers with your call sign, even just “Cessna Six Zero Foxtrot, standby”, two-way communication is established and you may enter the Class D (AIM 3-2-5 b 3, note 1). If the reply does not use your call sign, such as “aircraft calling Livermore Tower, standby”, it is not established and you must stay outside (note 2). If the tower says “remain outside the Class Delta airspace”, do exactly that until told otherwise.
The pattern instructions you will hear
The tower sequences you with a short instruction from a fixed list: “enter left base”, “make straight-in”, “right traffic”, or “continue” with a point to report, such as “report two mile final” (JO 7110.65 3-10-1 a). Unless the tower says otherwise, fixed-wing aircraft circle to the left (AIM 4-3-2 b). Read the instruction back with your call sign, and report where you were told to.

The landing clearance
You must have a landing clearance before you land (AIM 4-3-2 b), and the first readback of it must include the runway, with left, right or center where there is one (AIM 4-4-7 b).

After landing
Exit at the first available taxiway or as instructed, taxi clear of the hold-short markings and stop, and change to Ground only when the tower tells you to (AIM 4-3-21). Then call Ground with your position and request taxi to parking.

Airspace classes & what you must do on the radio
US airspace is by class. The radio requirement rises with the class. [AIM chapter 3; 4-3-2; 4-4-6]
- Class B
- A clearance is required: you must hear “cleared into the Class Bravo” before entering. Expect a squawk first and “remain clear” until cleared. Mode C transponder within 30 miles of the primary airport.
- Class C
- Two-way radio communication with the approach control must be established before entry — a reply that uses your call sign. A transponder with altitude reporting is required.
- Class D
- Two-way communication with the tower before entering the surface area; initial call about 15 miles out. “Aircraft calling, stand by” does NOT establish communication — remain outside. [AIM 4-3-2 a]
- Class E surface area
- No radio requirement in VFR conditions; a Special VFR clearance below basic VFR.
- Special VFR
- A clearance to operate in a surface area below VFR minima: clear of clouds, at least 1 statute mile. Request it from the tower where there is one; state your intentions in enough detail to fit the traffic. [AIM 4-4-6]

The traffic pattern
The legs have standard names — departure, upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, final — and the tower uses them in instructions. [AIM 4-3-2 c]
- Pattern altitude
- Propeller aircraft: 1,000 feet AGL unless the Chart Supplement says otherwise; large and turbine aircraft 1,500 feet. [AIM 4-3-3 a]
- Turns
- Left unless the chart or the tower says right (“RP” on the chart for a right pattern). [AIM 4-3-3 c, d]
- Entry
- Level, abeam the midpoint at pattern altitude; the tower may say “enter left downwind”, “enter left base”, “straight-in approved”, “make right traffic”. [AIM 4-3-3, FIG 4-3-2; JO 7110.65 3-10-1]
- Reports
- Give the report the tower asked for — “midfield downwind, runway two seven” — and nothing more; the tower adds “report two mile final” when it wants that.
- Extend / I’ll call your base
- Acknowledge with your identification and fly it. Do not turn base until told.
- Go around
- Answer “going around” with your identification, then fly: overfly the runway, climb to pattern altitude, enter on the crosswind unless told otherwise. [P/CG]
